Another excellent, groundbreaking flight sim from Simis. Basically a huge graphical update over AV8B Harrier Assault, released months earlier. Apparently Simis put 'Super-VGA' in the name to celebrate the fact that it was the first SVGA flight sim ever made ;) 'This was the first SVGA sim, which meant that instead of VGA graphics of 320 x 200 pixels, we now had 640 x 400. The visuals were similar to what we had previously only seen in military simulators and in a beautiful set of pastel colours. This sim became an unwitting participant in the censorship debate in Australia as the Catholic Teachers Federation, apparently eschewing the formality of reading the manual let alone playing the sim, asked for it to be banned on the basis it was offensive to the East Timorese!
One of the first truly excellent motorcycle racing games, SuperBike Challenge features smooth CGA graphics, multiplayer options, a wide variety of tracks, and intuitive keyboard and joystick controls. The game's split-screen display in two-player mode is one of the best and first of its kind, and the track selection (12 worldwide) is excellent. You can opt for a practice lap before the competition to get a feel for the track, as well as toggle between three difficulty levels. Although the game has largely been superseded by newer, more graphically appealing titles, it is definitely worth the nostalgic play-through as a game that was once years ahead of its time.
A fun frag-fest that pays homage to the arcade classic Battlezone, Spectre is a fun multiplayer 3D tank game that features a great capture-the-flag mode, cool futuristic graphics, and intuitive interface. Although the computer AI is capable, the game is very addictive in multiplayer mode. Spectre VR updates the original Spectre 2 years later with better graphics and more tank types to choose from.
Japan's Mach GoGoGo [retitled Speed Racer outside Japan] anime gained cultish popularity in the 1960s. We recall nostalgically Speed Racer's fight against a bizarre rogues' gallery of villains--villains with creepy names like Ace Deucey, Mr. Fixer, and Tongue Blaggard. Each episode e brought complex family dynamics; Dadaist, oneiric race tracks; comedy and tragedy; and virtuousness. Speed Racer's courage was as important as his Mach-5 in attaining victory. Given the anime's popularity, an official Speed Racer computer game seems bound for success.
